Homemade Chili Recipe

Homemade Chili Recipe– Tomato juice, zesty tomatoes simmered with black beans, chili beans, ground beef and sausage.

Homemade chili recipe

I’ve got the best homemade chili recipe for you today. I love, love, love this chili recipe and I’m sure you will too. Any time I fix this for people I always get asked for my recipe. After careful detail I finally wrote down my recipe and now I can share it here with you.

This recipe is a combination of my old way of making chili mixed with a method our good friend uses. I didn’t call it a recipe because he likes to change it around pretty often.

I know that we all like different types of chili and look for different things in our chili to consider it the best. This chili has been made according to our likes and I hope you give it a try. You can adjust the ingredients to better suit your taste.

This homemade chili is made with regular sausage as well as ground beef. I also add a couple of cans of tomato sauce to help it not be watery.

Our friend, Joel is the reason I add sausage and black beans to our chili and you should try it to too.

My mom grows tomatoes during the summer and cans the juice so I always use fresh tomato juice when making chili. Thanks for sharing, mom! I know that is not an option for everyone and store bought tomato juice works just fine. I have had to use it before. The tomato juice I used was in a quart size jar. So, if you are buying in the store look for something close to 32 oz.

I also like to use these Zesty Chili Style tomatoes. I use one can and I pour the entire can in my ninja to puree the tomatoes. We don’t like the chunks of tomatoes in our chili and this works great.

Now that it is officially fall and feels like it too, I can’t get enough of this chili. I like to make a pot of it and then we eat on it during the week for lunch.

I usually try to let this simmer for a couple of house before we devour it. 🙂

Here’s the recipe. Enjoy!

  1. 32 oz tomato juice (I used a quart of canned tomato juice from garden tomatoes)
  2. 1 (14.5 oz) can of Zesty Chili Style Tomatoes (I puree the can to avoid the chunks)
  3. 2 (8 oz) cans of tomato sauce
  4. 2 cans of Chili beans
  5. 1 can of black beans
  6. 1 pound of lean ground beef
  7. 1 pound of breakfast sausage
  8. 2 Tablespoons Chili Powder
  9. 1 Tablespoon Ground Cumin
  10. 1/2 Tablespoon Chipotle Chile Powder
  11. 1 Tablespoon Paprika
  12. 1 Tablespoon Smoked Paprika
  13. 1/4 teaspoon Pepper
  14. 1 teaspoon Salt
  15. 1 teaspoon Sugar
  1. Brown ground beef and drain.
  2. Brown sausage and drain.
  3. In a large pot add tomato juice, and can of zesty style tomatoes.
  4. Add hamburger and sausage.
  5. Add chili beans and black beans.
  6. Add spices and sugar.
  7. Stir all together.
  8. Cook together over medium heat for half an hour stirring frequently.
  9. Reduce heat and cover for and hour and a half.
  10. Stirring frequently.
  11. Ladle in bowls or spoon over hot dogs and top with cheese.
  1. My husband's family always cook their hot dogs in the pot of chili about 15 minutes before serving. That's how I do it too and it really does taste better.
