Poppy Chow is a popcorn treat that’s a fun alternative to the very popular puppy chow. Replace the cereal with air popped popcorn and you’ve got a delicious snack. It’s fun to make too and makes great gifts for neighbors, teachers and mail carriers.
What’s needed to make poppy chow?
For starters, you need an air popper popcorn maker. You could use the microwave bags but make sure it’s plain popcorn. I love my air popper and the kids have fun watching me make popcorn with it. The ingredients to make puppy chow are popcorn, powdered sugar, butter, peanut butter, semi-sweet chocolate and vanilla. It’s very similar to regular puppy chow.
This is the popcorn I use but you can use any plain popcorn. I love the mushroom style because it’s the big, puffy pieces. However, butterfly popcorn is easier to find and it will work too. As the popcorn is popping into the bowl I carefully watch for any kernels stuck to the popcorn and remove them as soon as I notice them. No one wants to bite into one of those!
- Air popcorn popper
- 9 cups air popped popcorn
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup peanut butter
- ½ cup butter salted or unsalted
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1½ cups powdered sugar
- Pop popcorn until you have 9 cups of popped popcorn and place in a large bowl
- In a medium saucepan melt butter, peanut butter, chocolate chips and stir in vanilla once mixture is all melted
- Slowly pour mixture over popcorn and add powdered sugar and toss until the popcorn is evenly coated. Spread mixture out onto baking sheets to set.
- A simple method I have used for coating all the popcorn in the powdered sugar is to place the popcorn that has the chocolate and peanut butter mixture on it in a NEW paper grocery bag and gently shake the bag to help distribute the powdered sugar easier.
Store in an airtight container for up to one week.
